October sees a whole month of events to enjoy in celebration of Older People’s Day. Sara Whatley gives you an overview of the events available, taken from the fully packed ‘Full of Life’ events programme
Once again, in 2018, East Sussex Seniors along with East Sussex County Council and Public Health will be celebrating Older People’s Day across East Sussex, with events held throughout October. This will be the 11th year that we have marked and recognised publicly the achievements and contributions that older people make to society.
As in previous years, a wide variety of events are being organised and hosted by older volunteers, many of which are free or very low cost for you to take part in. Feel free to bring along family and friends, everyone is welcome. Don’t worry about going to events on your own as you will often meet up with new people and the event holders are ready to welcome you.
Events are held all over East Sussex in the areas of Lewes, Wealden and Rother and you can find a huge range of activities to get involved in. Fancy getting sporty? Try some walking football, walking netball, badminton, pickleball, table tennis and short mat bowls. Time to test the grey matter? There are various fun quizzes and teasers to participate in, as well as interesting and informative talks to expand your horizons.
Embrace technology with free computer lessons, have fun with an afternoon of games and bingo or join the Royal Voluntary Service to explore Eastbourne’s rich heritage with talks from local historians. Rest assured, there are also many cups of coffee and tea, and many delicious cakes to be sampled at events along the way as well.
If you would like to get involved and be part of the celebrations, do get in touch with June Pratley, Engagement and Equality Officer, on 01273 335467.
