Council Chairman Attends West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service And County Carol Service

The Chairman of Horsham District Council Cllr Christian Mitchell attended a Service of Christmas Carols and Readings at Chichester Cathedral in aid of The Fire Fighters Charity on 14 December 2016

In attendance was the Lord Lieutenant Susan Pyper, the Chairman and Vice Chairman of West Sussex County Council, Mayors and Chairman from across the county of West Sussex and the Leader of West Sussex County Council.

Cllr Christian Mitchell said: “The role of a fire fighter is one of bravery, loyalty and devotion to public service. The service was an opportunity to gather together for Christmas thanksgiving and to recognise the men and women who risk their lives to save ours. The Fire Fighters Charity is the UK’s leading provider of services that enhance quality of life for serving and retired fire fighters, fire personnel and their families and over the years, they have helped hundreds of thousands of individuals by providing world-class treatment and support services.”

It costs £9million a year to keep The Fire Fighters Charity running and with no government funding they are completely reliant on the generosity and enthusiasm of their supporters.

They have three centres based in Devon, Cumbria and West Sussex, which offer a range of support programmes including physical rehabilitation and recuperation to members of the fire and rescue community in times of need. Their centre in Cumbria also offers nursing care.  To aid emotional recuperation, they offer one or two week breaks which are designed to help those who have suffered injury, illness, stress or bereavement.

Their free, confidential helpline is available to all members of the fire and rescue community.  They also available to provide practical assistance and solutions on a local level through their nationwide network of professional staff and volunteers.
