Gifts Galore And More!
by Lisa De Silva
This month Haywards Heath welcomes the opening of the award winning gift shop Calliope, a treasure trove of gorgeous gifts and perfect presents to spoil your friends, your family and yourself.
Winner of the prestigious ‘Best Newcomer Award’ at The Great Gift Shop Awards in 2014, Calliope already has two successful shops in Dorking and Alton and co-owners, Andy Adamson and Philip Downer, can’t wait to open their doors to Mid Sussex. “We’re really looking forward to meeting new customers and becoming part of the community of this great little town,” says Philip.
The name Calliope, pronounced Ca-lye-o-pea, is the name given to traditional fairground steam organs and was chosen to reflect the fun side of gifting. With their extensive retail experience, both Andy and Philip have relished the opportunity to develop their own business. “Our aim is to provide a selection of quality gifts at affordable prices,” explains Andy. “With the business small and flexible enough to tailor our offering to the local market, we try to stock products that match the tastes of the community.”
The comprehensive product range includes a fabulous selection of greetings cards, many from small independent suppliers; stylish home wares from Gisela Graham, Emma Bridgewater and Sophie Allport, Durance premium organic candles, Paperblanks notebooks, retro tinware from Robert Opie and a great new range of vintage style lighting products from Temerity Jones.
If you’re looking for a children’s gift, Calliope stock some lovely character merchandise; colourful Happy Jackson lunch boxes, a selection of traditional wooden toys from Orange Tree Toys and personalised framed prints from Porch Fairies. A wide range of women’s accessories, include scarves, handbags and jewellery from brands such as Joules, Peony, Disaster Designs and Tilly & Grace, are all also waiting to be discovered.
Often men can be badly catered for when it comes to the gift market. “Lots of men see pink and fluffiness in gift shops and don’t want to go in,” says Andy. “We’ve bucked that trend and not only provide a great gift selection for men, but attract them into the store with the music we play and sell, which features jazz, blues, classical and classic pop.”
With an emphasis on design led quality gifts at competitive prices, the stock is constantly updated to keep it fresh, with most products in the £5-20 range. Customer service is equally important and Calliope offers a free gift wrapping service, a free click and collect service and will go out of their way to source requested items – one past request was for a calendar featuring goats – the customer was thrilled!
As Philip says, “Whoever you are and whoever you’re buying for, you will be able to find a lovely gift for them in Calliope.”
