A ‘Just So’ Christmas Transforms Bateman’s This Winter
There’ll be magic at Bateman’s this December as the rooms are decorated in rich, opulent colours inspired by Rudyard Kipling’s travels and the animals from his Just So Stories.
Visitors to the writer Rudyard Kipling’s 17th-century family home, Bateman’s in Burwash, East Sussex, will be met with the warm glow from the hall fire and a majestic Christmas tree to welcome them. There will be handmade decorations in opulent colours and story-themed floral arrangements based on Kipling’s Just So Stories, which famously describe how different animals acquired their most distinctive features, such as how the leopard got his spots or how the elephant got his trunk.
The Property team and craft volunteers at Bateman’s are extremely creative and have a keen eye for detail. They’ve been busily working away for the past couple of months planning, brainstorming ideas and creating some beautiful handmade decorations, from a selection of materials including paper, fabric and natural foliage gathered from our estate and their gardens.
Louise Brangwin, Visitor Experience Officer at Bateman’s said: “The Kipling’s spent many Christmas’s travelling overseas, and we wanted to reflect this in the way we decorate the house for Christmas, giving it an exotic and opulent feel and creating some fun with animals from the Just So Stories. These decorations bring an added magic into the house and we look forward to our visitors enjoying it with us over the winter months.”
Alongside the decorated house during the Christmas season, visitors to Bateman’s can enjoy a full day out, with seasonal food and festive treats served in the Mulberry tea-room, hassle free Christmas shopping in the Oast-house shop, Just So storytelling sessions in the old kitchen and a ‘Just So’ children’s elephant trail in the garden.
Bateman’s Twilight Opening evenings will take place on Saturday 7th and Saturday 14th December, when the house will open until 6pm and visitors can take in the magical atmosphere of the decorated house at twilight. During these evenings the Oast house shop will be open and serving seasonal tastings, as well as offering a wonderful selection of gifts for plenty of Christmas inspiration.
Bateman’s Just So Christmas runs from Saturday 30th November – Sunday 5th January at Bateman’s, Bateman’s Lane, Burwash, East Sussex TN19 7DS.
