In its 105th year, the East Grinstead Swimming Club continues to strive to widen its appeal to swimmers of all ages and abilities.

Like many sports clubs, the East Grinstead Swimming Club (EGSC) must work hard to gain and retain members in an environment where an ever growing number of sports compete for the attention of children of all ages. New Chair, Matthew Backshall, puts the Club’s success down to the volunteers and the friendly nature of the Club. “We are really fortunate to have a great club with dedicated coaches and volunteers, as well as friendly, enthusiastic and talented swimmers.”

Despite being a small club, EGSC can boast swimmers competing at County, Regional and National level. One of the key changes which the Club introduced at the start of the season in September, is a new training and squad structure, with the aim to improve the training the Club offers to its swimmers, regardless of their ability or ambitions. There are four competitive and six training squads within the Club, catering for all abilities, with progression through the squads, based on ability, age and the swimmer’s aims. Head Coach, Nigel Hitchcock, oversees all the squads, to develop and ensure best practice; whilst the training programmes, individual swimmer coaching and parent contact remain with the individual squad coach to provide a familiar point of contact.

The Club’s goals remain consistent with its 105 year heritage, which are to make swimming accessible for all children and offer a teaching programme, which encourages the enjoyment of swimming, whilst offering the opportunity to transition and develop into competitive swimming. The Club wants to provide exemplary coaching standards that enable swimmers the best chance of fulfilling their potential.

The Club is very excited to announce that it has recently had its application for a licence to host an Open Meet gala approved. This will take place on Sunday 22 April 2018 at the K2 in Crawley. This will be the first time the Club has hosted a competition open to individual competitors from other clubs, rather than team events.

As a not-for-profit sports club, the Club is always focussed on increasing its fund raising efforts. The Open Meet will be a big step towards raising important funds to plough back into the progression and development of the Club so it can offer current and future swimmers a wider range of training options. EGSC believes it can provide a healthy team environment for children, as well as developing individual goals; while swimming provides a rewarding form of exercise and a valuable, potentially life-saving skill.

The Club is actively seeking corporate sponsors to collaborate with the Club. If you or your company would like to sponsor and support EGSC, please contact
