This Month's Walk: Ashurst Wood to East Grinstead

This Month’s Walk: Ashurst Wood to East Grinstead

By Les Campbell

Start from the Three Crowns pub just off the A22. This walk is mainly through farmland and the attractive Ashplats Wood with the final section into East Grinstead through a short section of suburbia.

002Please note that navigation is a little tricky in places and will be a test of your map reading skills! It would be wise to carry a copy of the relevant Ordnance Survey Explorer map, although it is hoped that the route directions will be adequate!

Opposite the Three Crowns, turn left into Ivy Dene Lane. Opposite the Rocks, turn right on a signed path going downhill. On reaching a gravel track go left. Go through the gate marked Beeches Farm and carry on ahead on a tarmac track. Keep to the left of farm buildings and carry on ahead.

On reaching a pair of metal gates, go through the left hand gate and carry on ahead on a right hand field edge. Follow around the periphery of Stoke Brunswick School, and where the field edge swings sharp right, cross to a gate with a waymark.

Go over a stile beside the gate and bear half right to a stile in the hedge in front of you. Go over the stile and immediately turn left going slightly downhill on a sunken track. Shortly before the end of the track, look for a signed path on your left and go over the stile. Once over, cross to the visible gate ahead and go over a stream and into a paddock.

WalkCarry on uphill to find another stile which at the time of writing was very overgrown. Go over this stile and turn immediately right on a path, which follows around a house and garden. On reaching a driveway, cross to a gate and bear right to another gate then straight across to the far corner of the field and a gap in the trees. Go downhill to cross a footbridge, over a stile and into a field. Cross the middle of the field on the signed path to a stile beside a metal gate, go over this and down into the next field corner to cross a footbridge. Go through a kissing gate, and across the middle of the large fi eld ahead to the top corner where a finger of woodland juts out. At the top of the field, go through a gateway and follow the track ahead, which bears left around a pond and then right.

The track swings left towards the distant buildings of Fairlight Farm and in a few yards, go right through a hedge on a signed path bearing immediately left to walk parallel with the track you have just left. At the field corner turn right and then left at the next field corner to eventually join a tarmac track by the entrance to Little Fairlight.

Turn right, and in a few yards, turn left on an enclosed path alongside fencing. The path broadens out, and you should follow the obvious path through Ashplats Wood. At a path junction, ignore the path off to your left and carry on ahead soon to walk behind houses. On reaching a wide grassy area, keep right and on reaching houses side step to pick up a narrow path on your right. On reaching a partially surfaced road between houses, follow this out to join the B2110. Turn left along this road to cross a bridge over the A22, and at the next road junction, turn right for the centre of East Grinstead.

This 4 mile linear walk takes you through the farm and woodland between Ashurst Wood and East Grinstead.

We are very grateful to Les Campbell for bringing us new and exciting local walks every month. A founder member and former Chairman of the Mid Sussex Ramblers, he is a very experienced and enthusiastic walker indeed. Les insists on testing all routes personally, making sure they are suitable for walking. However, even he cannot guarantee the eff ects of the weather, or roadworks, or any other factors outside of his control.
