Total White Out

Total White Out

As the weather gets warmer it’s finally time to get into lighter fashions, and a white shirtdress is the perfect place to start – style away for a unique take on the look.

If you love a floaty white shirtdress, then you’re in luck – it’s one of this season’s favourite go-to items. This timeless classic will be in hot demand this spring and it’s a great item to own because of its ease to dress up or down, depending on the occasion. What other silhouette can take you so simply from work to a cocktail party or be the perfect choice for lunch with friends at the weekend? And if this season’s designers’ collections are anything to go by, shirtdresses will be readily available in an abundance of shapes and styles – possibly one for every day of the spring if you want!

Why white you might ask? White is a great colour for warmer weather – it’s been a long-time favourite in every wardrobe, but this SS17 it has been moved up a notch with designers choosing to make their star pieces white. Its versatility plays a huge part in its popularity – it can be clinical and minimalist, soft and pretty and crisp and business-like all at the same time. So make sure to give this season’s favourite silhouette a go in this particular colour.

Interesting waistlines and unexpected hemlines add that extra something to simple white shirt dresses. Focus on your waist and choose a belted number with a longer or shorter hemline to give your waist emphasis. Try a more masculine cut shirt, that resembles an oversized man’s shirt – you can clinch the waist of these more loose-fitting shirts with extra long belts, letting the tail hang long, adding a touch of fun to the masculine look.

The split hemline is another quirk of this season, so don’t be surprised to see clothes with ‘accidental’ cuts decorating their hemlines. This look is particularly flattering on a longer length shirtdress – giving it a delightfully cool and offbeat look in an effortless way.

Ruffled sleeves and intricate embroidery on shirtdresses also reflect this season’s other trends. These give the traditional style of the shirtdress a much-needed flare. For a casual day look, pop on some flat shoes, such as brogues, pumps or smart trainers. How about switching it up for a great evening look? Just add heels! These can be skinny or chunky – the best thing about the shirtdress is that everything looks great with it.

Transition winter to spring with long-sleeved shirtdresses that you can easily layer over your favourite turtleneck and slouchy jeans for a casual and comfortable look. Pair with boots and knits on cooler days. As summer approaches, don’t leave your shirtdresses unloved in the wardrobe, wear them with sandals, sunnies and a big sunhat – especially beachwear-meets-evening-wear maxi dresses.

As much as we love timeless button-down shirtdress classics, it’s always fun to add new twists – personalise your look and try out a few different styles.
